INTUITION
You know you shouldn't do it, but you do it anyway. And then you probably regret doing it.
All of us at one point in our lives must have felt this. Something in you guides you into making decisions. That something is called intuition.
Now, intuition is often termed illogical and unreliable because it cannot be measured or explained. It's a feeling you get, an uncomfortable, weird feeling that can't be explained physiologically.
In psychology, intuition is an epiphenomenon which is holistic and automated. Intuition gives us a fast and effective response when most needed, based on known facts and experiences.
R Hogarth in his paper states that intuition offers a reduction in overall cognitive load and the ability to respond instantly while providing confidence in our knowledge and decision making even though it may defy analysis. Intuition helps us survive by providing fast responses that, usually, offer an appropriate, immediate action to address a situation. Such responses rely heavily on “cultural capital,” learnings specific to the environment in which we find ourselves.
In simple terms intuition is basically our brain telling us the correct choice based on information our subconscious mind has picked up. This means intuition is valid and factual. It is just like any other thought process that we have. So then why do we dismiss it so much?
I feel like this is not the right way to do it.
I have a feeling something bad is going to happen.
I think she is having some problems.
Maybe we shouldn't do this. I have a bad feeling about this.
These are some common statements we come across in our daily life. And more so than not, these are dismissed off as silly or unnecessary or overthought.
Now what if these were justified thoughts we have because of information our brain had managed to collect, that we have yet to perceive and apprehend.
So we basically ignore smart decisions of our brain because they are classified as feelings. Which brings me to my next question,
Why are feelings not validated?
In this world of continuous misery, I truly believe that the only way to make it, is to understand and accept our feelings. Trust our instincts and believe our intuitions. Nothing is as it seems. Nothing is black or white.
But we are lucky enough to have a mind that is able to observe and grasp even those tiny nuances and help us make decisions. So the next time you are confused, listen to your brain. Understand that you know more than you realise. Your ignorance and lack of self confidence shouldn't put you in conflicts that you could have avoided. Your mind is rational and gives you intuitions, which are feelings.
See, its amazing!
Listen to your intuitions.
Believe them
Trust them
Make smart choices not approved ones.
With all the love in the world
Yours truly,
Butterfly
